We Meet In Silence

April 19, 2009

Thanks again to Ang for putting together Microfantasy Monday. This week’s theme: silence.

He watched in fascination at the conversations before him. The reality hadn’t hit him when they talked online. But now, with his surprise visit to her campus, he was able to see her in her natural habitat. Short curls framed her face with hair turned all golden fire in the sun. Hands flew rapidly, her mouth open as if in laughter, but no sound came out. All around her were other conversations, equally frenetic, equally silent.

Suddenly she became aware of him, watching and turned with a slight glare at the rudeness. Eyes grew wide, and a hint of vulnerability came into them. Would he hate this reality, or would the words of wanting be fulfilled now. She stood, wiping suddenly damp hands against her jeans. What she saw in his eyes reassured her and she quickened her pace, soon running, to be swept up into his arms. Lips met, bodies touched and melted, all within her world of silence.

I’ve actually been thinking about a full story with this. I know many people who are deaf, and it changes the way they perceive things.

This was beautiful! It reminds me of meeting my husband for the first time in person. You captured the emotions perfectly.

Wow, you micro-ed that story very very well, captured so much in a small number of well-chosen words. Very nicely done ๐Ÿ™‚
